A lifelong resident of Birmingham, Mims graduated from the University of Alabama in 1980 with a degree in real estate and finance. In 1980 home mortgage rates were 17% and his college professors recommended that he consider another career path. Two days after graduating from Alabama, Mims joined Wallace Business Forms in outside sales. In March 1984 both Mims and Bill Miller joined the Piper Sales team. To accommodate Mims and Bill joining Piper, a storage closet with no windows was converted into a 2-person office with 2 desks and 2 telephones.
In 2017 Mims was promoted to Vice President to assist with managing Piper’s converting and warehousing operations. Today, Piper has 2 rewinders and 2 sheeters operating 24/7 along with 700,000 square feet of warehouse space. Good converting managers and warehouse managers allow Mims, along with Kelly McDaniel, to maintain his Northeast sales territory. He also serves on Piper’s Board of Directors.
While at the University of Alabama, Mims was president of his college fraternity, President of Jason’s (the senior men’s honorary) and involved in student government. Upon graduation he joined the Birmingham Jaycees and served as president, he has served on the boards of the Birmingham Museum of Art, Magic City Art Connection, Kings Home ( at risk boys and girls) and is currently active with the Boy Scouts of America.
Mims’s wife Mary works at Piper in the accounting department and they have 2 sons Will (22) and Nick (19).
